Best TV Shows at the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes is an award ceremony that honors the best talent in film and television for the year.  2016 was a great year for both television and film.  Movies like La La Land, Moonlight, Manchester by the Sea, and Lion were the elite films of 2016.  In television, the first seasons of new shows, Atlanta and The Crown received prestigious awards, but what show earned the most?

Best TV Shows

Television often is overlooked in the industry because film has been around for longer.  The first Golden Age of television was said to be between 1947 and 1960 when shows like The Twilight Zone, Television Playhouse, and Westinghouse Studio One became popular.  It wasn’t until shows like The Sopranos that paved the way for the second “Golden Age” of drama television.  After the first Golden Age, TV mostly consisted of sitcoms, cartoons, and goofy laugh tracks.  But after 2000, television started to move more towards drama, with movie-quality writing and performances emerging onto the scene.  Nowadays, the television industry is flooded with new dramas every year.

There was a huge list of notable drama shows in 2016.  From new shows like, Atlanta, The Crown, and The People v. O.J. Simpson, to new seasons of House of Cards, Better Call Saul, and Mr. Robot, there was plenty to talk about.  The People V. O.J. Simpson had the most nominations, but it was the miniseries The Night Manager that took home three Golden Globes, making it the most awarded TV show at the Golden Globes.

The Night Manager is a British series that starred Tom Hiddleston and Hugh Laurie (House).  It is based on a novel written by John le Carré about a luxury hotel manager in Cairo, Egypt during the Egyptian Revolution of 2011.  It is an intense mini series that garnered about 10 million UK viewers a week.

Importance to the Industry

The Golden Globes are an important celebration of the movie and television industry.  It shows aspiring actors what it takes to be on the stage receiving awards, and it reminds us how inspiring this industry can be.  While many may think that the movie industry is all about money and fame, the Golden Globes remind us that the people behind the camera, the writers, and the actors are extremely passionate for the art of film-making.
